Small to medium bedroom rugs can often be spot-cleaned at home with a mild detergent solution. Wool rugs should be professionally cleaned every 1–2 years; most cotton and synthetic rugs can be machine washed at a cool temperature. Check the care label, cleaning instructions vary significantly by material and construction.
Use a non-slip underlay cut to the same size as the rug. This is particularly important in a bedroom where the rug is stepped on directly from the bed. A quality underlay also adds cushioning underfoot and extends the life of the rug by reducing friction with the floor beneath.
Wool is the most luxurious choice for a bedroom, warm, naturally soft underfoot, and durable. Cotton rugs are lighter and easier to wash. Handwoven and tufted rugs bring texture and character. In a bedroom, where comfort underfoot is the priority, pile height and softness matter more than in a dining room or hallway.
Both work. A large rug that extends under the bed and beyond all sides creates a unified, grounded look. Two runners, one on each side, are more practical and easier to clean. The choice usually comes down to the size of the room and how much of the floor you want to cover.
For a queen bed, a rug of 200x300cm is the standard recommendation, it should extend at least 60cm beyond each side of the bed and beyond the foot. For a king bed, 240x330cm works well. If you prefer a smaller rug, a runner placed at the foot of the bed or two bedside runners are effective alternatives.
