Buying a sideboard or buffet

Yes, a low sideboard of the right height can serve as a TV unit. Check that the height places the screen at a comfortable viewing level from your sofa, the centre of the screen should be approximately 100–110cm from the floor when seated. Also confirm there is adequate ventilation for media equipment in the cupboard space.

Solid oak and walnut are the most durable materials for a sideboard in everyday use, the surface holds up to being loaded and unloaded, and the finish doesn't chip. Ceramic-top sideboards add extra surface durability. Lacquered finishes look clean but are more susceptible to chipping in heavy use.

A sideboard works in almost any room, dining room, living room, hallway, bedroom. In a living room it provides storage and a display surface. In a hallway it creates a practical, considered entry point. In a dining room it's ideal for storage alongside service. The material and finish should suit the room's character.

A typical 160cm sideboard might include 4 drawers and 2 cupboard compartments, enough for table linen, serving pieces, crockery and general household storage. Larger models offer more narrower models less. The internal configuration, drawers vs. shelves vs. cupboards is shown in the product images and listing.

Standard sideboard height is 75–85cm and standard depth is 40–45cm. Width varies significantly, from 100cm to over 220cm depending on the model. Always check the depth against the wall space available; a sideboard that protrudes too far into a room can disrupt traffic flow more than expected.
