What to consider when buying a dining table

Ceramic is the most practical for everyday use, resistant to heat, scratches and stains, and easy to clean. Solid oak is warm and characterful but will show marks over time, which many consider part of its appeal. Marble is the most striking but requires more care and is susceptible to staining from acidic liquids. Choose the material that suits how you actually use the table.

In most cases, yes, our dining tables are designed with standard dimensions that work with a wide range of chair styles. The proportions of table and chair should feel balanced, a heavy, substantial table looks odd with very lightweight chairs, and vice versa. Our team is happy to help you find the right pairing.

Solid oak is very straightforward to maintain. Wipe spills promptly with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Oil annually with a furniture-grade oil to keep the timber nourished and to maintain its natural warmth. Avoid placing in direct sunlight for extended periods and keep away from heat sources. Properly maintained, solid oak improves with age.

Standard dining table height is 75cm, which works with most dining chairs that have a seat height of 45–47cm. This leaves approximately 28–30cm of clearance between seat and table, enough for comfortable leg room without forcing you to reach up. If you're ordering chairs separately, always check both measurements.

A 160cm table seats 6 comfortably. A 200cm table seats 8. For 10 or more, look at 240cm or an extendable option that opens to that length. These are guides, generous chairs and wide armrests can reduce the number that fit comfortably. Always allow at least 90cm of clearance on all sides of the table for chairs and movement.

Standard dining chair seat height is 45–47cm, designed to work with a standard 75cm dining table and leave a comfortable 28–30cm of clearance between seat and table underside. Always check both measurements when buying a table and chairs separately, a mismatch in seat and table height is one of the most common and avoidable buying mistakes.
