Choosing a chest of drawers

Most of our drawer furniture is delivered flat-packed and requires assembly. This is standard for bedroom furniture of this scale, it allows pieces to be moved through doorways and assembled in the room where they'll live. Our delivery service includes installation and removal of packaging.

Yes, a chest of drawers works very well in a hallway for storing scarves, gloves and everyday items, in a living room as an alternative to a sideboard, or in a dining room for table linen. The key is choosing a material and finish that suits the room's character, solid oak or walnut tends to work across multiple contexts.

Solid oak and walnut are the most durable materials for drawer furniture that will be used daily. The joints hold up over years of opening and closing, and the surface doesn't chip or peel the way lacquered finishes can. A solid wood chest of drawers is a long-term investment, buy it once and it should last decades.

For a bedroom used by two people, 6–8 drawers is a useful minimum. For a single person, 4–6 is usually sufficient. If you're short on wardrobe space for folded items, more drawers compensate. Think through what you're actually storing, separating different clothing categories, before deciding on the configuration.

A tallboy is a chest with more drawers stacked in a taller, narrower footprint, typically 5 or more drawers in a column. A standard chest of drawers is wider with fewer drawers, usually 3–4 rows. The choice depends on your storage needs and the floor space available. A tallboy is efficient where floor space is limited; a wider chest is more accessible.
