Finding the right armchair for your home

Most armchairs sit between 75cm and 85cm wide. Allow at least 60cm of clearance around the chair for comfortable use. The seat depth, typically 55–65cm is equally important, a deeper seat suits lounging, a shallower one is better for upright sitting.

A single armchair placed at an angle to a sofa, rather than pushed flat against the wall, creates a natural conversation zone. Pair it with a side table and a lamp for a proper reading corner. Resist the urge to mirror the sofa exactly; a slightly different fabric or form adds more interest than a matched set.

An accent chair is typically lighter in scale and chosen as much for its form as its function, It tends to be more visually distinct. An armchair is generally more substantial and built for extended comfortable sitting. The line between them is blurry, but seat depth and cushion density are the practical differences.

In many cases, yes. Several of our armchairs are available in the same fabric families as our sofas, making it straightforward to create a coordinated look without a matched suite. Our team can advise on cross-range fabric availability before you commit.

For reading, look for an armchair with good lumbar support, a slightly higher back, and armrests at a comfortable height. Our upholstered armchairs in bouclé or fabric tend to work well, they're warm without being heavy, and the structure supports you without feeling rigid.
