A high quality tufted rug is durable for normal domestic use, though it differs from a handwoven rug in construction. The pile is held by an adhesive backing rather than being woven through the structure, over time, and with very heavy use, this backing can degrade. For high-traffic areas, a quality wool tufted rug on a non-slip underlay performs well.
Some handwoven rugs have very slightly irregular edges, this is a natural characteristic of the handmade process and not a defect. Dimensions are given as approximate and may vary by 2–5cm. If precise sizing is critical, this is worth considering. For most placements, natural variation in a handwoven rug adds to rather than detracts from its character.
Rotate the rug every 6–12 months to ensure even wear. Vacuum regularly on a low setting, high suction can pull at the weave. For spills, blot immediately and allow to dry flat. Professional cleaning every 2–3 years is recommended for wool rugs. Avoid machine washing handwoven rugs unless the care label specifically permits it.
Wool handwoven rugs are durable enough for most domestic high-traffic areas, a hallway, a living room, a dining room. Flat-weave handwoven rugs tend to wear better in high-traffic positions than pile rugs, as there's no pile to compress or matt over time.
Our handwoven rugs are made from wool, cotton, jute and blended fibres depending on the collection. Wool handwoven rugs are the most durable and luxurious, cotton rugs are lighter and easier to clean, while jute and natural fibre rugs are more casual and work well in less formal spaces.
A handwoven rug is made on a loom by a skilled weaver, working row by row with the weft thread. The process is slower, requires more skill, and produces a rug with natural variation in texture, tension and pattern, no two are identical. Machine made rugs are more consistent and more affordable, but lack the character and longevity of the handwoven product.
