Choosing a bookcase or shelving unit

The most effective approach is to intersperse books with objects, a small lamp, a plant, a considered ceramic piece. Leave some shelves partially empty. Group books by colour or height in sections rather than filling every shelf to the edge. Restraint is the key, a bookcase that looks full to capacity rarely looks considered.

Yes, a freestanding bookcase of 180cm or taller can effectively divide an open-plan space into zones without completely closing the sightline. For this use, a bookcase without a back panel works best, it remains open to both sides and allows light to pass through. Ensure it's secured to the wall for stability.

For standard 2.4m ceiling heights, a bookcase of 180–200cm is proportionate and accessible, you won't need a step to reach the top shelf. Floor-to-ceiling shelving can be striking but requires custom fitting and makes the room feel more committed. Mid-height bookcases of 120–140cm work well below windows or in lower-ceilinged spaces.

A bookcase typically has a back panel, fixed or adjustable shelves, and a more enclosed structure, it contains and frames what's on it. Open shelving has no back panel and a more minimal aesthetic, it displays rather than contains, and tends to read as lighter in a room. Both work well; the choice usually comes down to what you're storing and the overall aesthetic.
